Whitwell Middle School Paper-Clip Project
This after-school project involves eighth grade students who are learning about the Holocaust and how prejudice and power in the wrong hands can be catastrophic. We have a project that we would like your help on.
We are trying to have 6,000,000 paper-clips sent to our school to represent the 6,000,000 victims of the Holocaust.

"We chose paper-clips for a special reason. During World War II, Norwegians wore paper-clips on their clothes to show their opposition to Nazism and anti-Semitism. ”

Whitwell Middle School is a small rural middle school located in eastern Tennessee. Our student body consists of about 425 students who are mostly Christian with very little cultural diversity. In our entire student body, we have only 5 African-American students. Those 5 students represent all of the cultural diversity in our school.
It is for this reason that we decided that our students needed to be prepared to handle the diverse world that they will be charged with leading in the future.
However, when we mentioned that 6,000,000 Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, our students could not believe that that many people were killed and no one did anything to stop it. So, to show them just how many 6,000,000 is, we came up with the paper-clip project.

We chose paper-clips for a special reason. During World War II, Norwegians wore paper-clips on their clothes to show their opposition to Nazism and anti-Semitism.
When completed, we will build a sculpture with the help of a local artist to be displayed in our town. The memorial sculpture is being designed by a California jewelry manufacturer and will stand as a lasting memorial for those who gave so much.
Our project will continue until December 31, 2001. At the end of this time, we will decide if the project will need to be extended.
It is not important to us how many paper-clips each person wants to send. We'll leave that decision up to them. The paper-clips should be sent to:

Whitwell Middle School
Holocaust Project
ATTN: S.Roberts/D.Smith
1130 Main Street
Whitwell, TN 37397
From tracking the states from which the paper-clips were sent to counting and organizing the load, every student at Whitwell Middle School will have a hand in making this project a success.
Thank you in advance for sending us paper-clips!
Update: As of March 14, 2001, the school has collected 2,108,622 paper-clips. Please keep sending us paper-clips!

EARTH HOUR: [03.28.09]

James,

Thank you for your support and calling to check in. Sorry it took me so long to respond to you. We are so busy this week getting ready for the event and the VIP party! We hope you can attend. You should have received an invitation last night.

As you know, we have a “students” page on our Web site that includes the names of classes or schools that have signed on to participate in Earth Hour. Just We will add Meigs Magnet Middle School to this list.

One thing that many schools have decided to do on Friday is a mock Earth Hour. This is a great way to include students in the participation of Earth Hour. It will also help them to grasp the message behind Earth Hour and share this information with their parents. Hopefully they will bring the lessons they learned at school home with them. Here is a link to a set of lesson plans that revolve around Earth Hour that you can pass along to your teachers. This is another good way that students can learn about the real meaning behind Earth Hour: http://www.earthhourus.org/action_parents.php.

I’ve also attached a couple documents to this e-mail.

The first is a letter that you may modify to send to parents and students encouraging them to sign up as individuals on the Web site. You would just need to take a look and fill in the appropriate information. We are trying to get as many people involved as possible, and everyone who is interested in participating should go sign up on our Web site, http://www.earthhourus.org/nashville/nashville.php. It would be really neat to be the school that has signed up the most students for Nashville Earth Hour 2009!

Secondly, I have attached a couple buttons/banners that you may put on your Web and social media sites to show Meigs Middle School’s participation in this year’s event. When posting to your Web site, please consider making the button a hyperlink to www.earthhourus.org/nashville.

Also, here is a blurb about Earth Hour that you can put into your newsletter if you are looking for more information:

Earth Hour Nashville 2009

On March 28, 2009, at 8:30 p.m., tens of millions of people around the world will come together once again to make a bold statement about climate change by doing something quite simple – turning off their lights for one hour.

As one of only seven American cities selected by the World Wildlife Fund as a flagship Earth Hour city, Nashville joins a group of prominent cities participating this year: Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta and San Francisco. We need your help to spread the word.

It is simple. Just let us know you are interested in becoming a participating organization, and we’ll keep you informed with up-to-date news, important dates and ways you can show your support. We’ll also list your organization on the Earth Hour Nashville Web site and send cool widgets and buttons to display on yours.

Please pass this e-mail along to your membership, and feel free to e-mail me at earthhour@mpf.com for more information.

What Can You Do To Make a Difference?
Below are some suggestions for turning out and taking action. Of course, we encourage you and your organization to be creative and find your own unique ways to bring attention to the escalating climate crisis.

• Sign up at http://www.earthhourus.org/nashville/nashville.php to receive e-mail updates and volunteer to turn off your lights on March 28.
• “Friend” or “fan” Earth Hour Nashville on Facebook.
• Follow Earth Hour Nashville on Twitter.
• Blog about Earth Hour 2009.
• Flip your switches! Turn off unnecessary lights, appliances and devices.
• Dine by candlelight.
• Contact family, friends and co-workers and encourage them to participate.
• Nashville Electric Service provides tips for a “do-it-yourself” home energy audit, so ask about it and give your home a green makeover.
• Chill out! Turn off gadgets and take one hour to just relax and reflect on how you can reduce your carbon footprint.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
