Line of Inquiry:
How do the performers of Echoa have conversations through rhythm (percussion), gibberish, gestures and movement?
In preparation for first TA visit, teachers plan to:
Using music or a spoken phrase, have students demonstrate portraying different emotions through music or words.
First TA Visit Entry Point / ideas:
Explore conversations in pairs and in small groups using gibberish and exaggerated gestures. Introduce some elements of dance movement to blend with the nonverbal conversation.
Between first and second TA visits, teachers plan to:
Have students express different emotions and communicate through dance. May choose to connect to pop culture dances, or connect to/identify with animal movements. i.e. “What about a squirrel’s movements make it look sillier than a bear?” Have a conversation with dance.
Second TA Visit Entry Point / ideas:
Connect rhythms to everyday life
Explore creating and having a conversation with rhythm.
Between second and third TA visits, teachers plan to:
Explore having a conversation with a piece of recorded music by having students listen to it and react by layering their own rhythm or responding with percussion.
Third TA Visit Entry Point / ideas:
Explore having a conversation with both rhythm and movement.
Between third TA visit and field trip, teachers will:
Ideas on connecting to curriculum.
