NOTES
Play-Dough Sizes: 49/50 = Earth... 1/50 = Moon...
If the Earth were the size of a globe and sitting in our classroom, Venus would be on Main Street. The Sun would be located at the Batman building.
There are over 400,000,000,000 (billion) stars in our galaxy!
The moon is 30 "earths" away from the Earth...
AU = 93,000,000 miles... Distance from Sun to Earth... [8 light minutes]...
70,000AU = 1 light year
400 billion stars in our Milky Way Galaxy...
4.3 light years is the next closest star - Alpha Centauri...
Eratosthenes made conjectures about the Earth being round in 200 BC. Once the Dark Ages (a period where learning disappeared) began, the ideas about a round Earth reverted back to the idea of a flat Earth.
Eratosthenes noticed in 200 BC, that there was no shadow in Alexandria, Egypt where he was, but a shadow could be seen in the bottom of a well on Syene, Egypt. He also noticed that the tops of ships could always be seen before the rest of the boat out on the sea. These observations led him to study, experiment, and hypothize that the earth was indeed round. These ideas became lost and then rediscovered again after the Dark Ages in a period known as the Renaissance.

The winter solstice is December 21 on the Northern Hemisphere. There is no shadow (the sun is directly over head) on the Tropic of Capicorn. The North pole is shaded. Sun shadow is longest.
The equinox positions are one quarter turn. At this point the is no shadow on the Equator. The time of light and dark is equal. The dates are March 20 and September 22.
In a model where 1 pixel (dot) is the size of Earth, the Sun is 109 pixels...
Local noon is the time of day when the shadow of the sun is its shortest.
On May 20 local noon was: Knoxville 12:27 CDT, Nashville 12:37 CDT, & Memphis 12:44 CDT.
