•{Task #1}.....
| How Much is 1,000? |
| THE TASK: Assemble a chain link of 1,000 paper clips. How long do you predict it will be? Why? How might larger numbers, such as 1,000,000, look in relation to the 1,000 paper clips? Explain.
[HERE]: How much is 1,000? (Activity Sheet)...

•{Task #2}.....
| A Wall of 1,000,000. |
| THE TASK: How much is one million? How big is it? How does 1,000,000 relate to other big numbers?
Look at the dot paper given. Assemble a wall of 1,000,000 dots. Decide upon an order or array of the paper that will show the exponential power of 1,000,000. Explain.

•{Task #3}.....
| Suitcase 1,000,000s. |
| THE TASK: A radio contest has drawn your name to particiapte in a special contest at the end of the week. You will win $1,000,000 if you can complete the contest to the required specifications. The jist of the contest is that you must go into a bank vault and "take" your money carrying it by hand in one suitcase. The only denomination of currency in the bank vault is $1 bills. There are no other bills in the vault at this time. Can you do it? If so, how? How much space will the money take up in the suitcase? Can you carry it unassisted? Explain why and prove your theory.
If you can't make this "deal" work, is there another way to make it work? If the $1 bills won't work, what is the lowest denomination of currency that would work. Explain why and prove your theory.
|
•{Task #4}.....
| Space Distances. |
| THE TASK: How big is space?
What is an Astronomical Unit? How big is it? Why is an AU used?
What is a light-year? How much is one light-year? Explain and show this in miles.
What is the closest star system to our solar system? How far away are the closest stars to us? What is its distance? How much further are the next stars? How far are other stars?
How can scientific notation help with these numbers?
