Mr. P's Note Home!

Volume 8  Issue 33                                                           April 26, 2011

Join Us!

Mrs. Parsons sent an EVITE last Friday to everyone in the class.  If you did not receive it, please let Mr. P know so that the correct e-mail address can be used to get the EVITE to your family.  Below is a copy of what the initiation said:

How has the school year gotten by this quickly?  In celebration of finishing up the year and to celebrate Mr. PÕs birthday, we would like to invite you to a family celebration!  We have reserved a shelter at the Two Rivers Park at the Two Rivers exit off Briley Parkway.  This is close to Opry Mills.  The shelter is in Area 1 closest to the big playground.  LetÕs make this a family event!  We will provide the main course of hamburgers, hot dogs, buns and the dessert of birthday cake and ice cream to celebrate Mr. PÕs birthday, which is on June 1.  If you are able to bring the extras, that would be great.  Please RSVP and let me know how many are coming.  There is a list of Who's Bringing What tab to check what you can bring.  Please leave me a comment if I have forgotten something.   This will let everyone know what is remaining.

You all really are the best and we look forward to celebrating with you!

From Mr. PÉ

1.  Sixth Grade Field Day is now scheduled for May 18.   We are having field day t-shirts made.  Since no student submitted a design for the t-shirt, Mrs. Parsons made this t-shirt design.  The t-shirt color will be yellow, and the cost will be between $12 and $15.  Once we have confirmation, an order form will be distributed.

2.  Rocket Day will now be May 20. We continue our study of the U.S. space program and rocketry.  We will also be building model rockets to launch on that day.

3.  Penny gave birth to four cool cavies last Thursday.  Check out some of the pictures of her at our ÒgalleriesÓ section of the website and at http://www.flyparsons.org/penny.html.

4.  Returned papers are being sent today.  Please send back the signed Tuesday Signature Sheet. There are lots of low quiz grades that are direct assessments of class instruction that still need to be corrected.  Some missing assignments are still not completed.  Students, please turn in all your late work and make corrections.

5. Last Friday was Earth Day.  We have studied many aspects of the impact our actions have on our planet.  As a culminating activity, students are each making a Prezi highlighting interesting, factual, and compelling ideas and conversations that hopefully will inspire others in our global community to get on board!

6. Healthful living is very important.  The NFL ÒPlay 60Ó program aims for kids to get 60 minutes of play a day, and weÕre doing that in May!  Each day of May, kids are asked to log all physical activity in the ÒPlay 60Ó book.  Hoops for Hearts is also going on this week through PE.  Look for a flyer that was sent home today.  Please pledge on-line to support the American Heart Association.

¯  MAY EVENTS:  Mark your calendars for many fun events!  We will have Rocket Day on Wednesday, May 18.  Field Day will be on Friday, May 20, and a sixth grade picnic will be held on Friday, May 27.  More details to follow in the coming weeks.

Field Trip IdeasÉ

Our class will be taking a trip to the Adventure Science Center and the Parthenon after spring break.  Due to lost time from snow, we will take these field trips after school.  The plan will be for kids to be picked up at dismissal time and then meet at the field trip destination shortly thereafter.  None of these trips are required, but a sincere attempt at making it to each would be greatly appreciated!  A note detailing dates and times will be sent home. We will also possibly go to the Renaissance Festival on one Saturday in May.  Lastly, Mrs. Lange is planning a gathering at the end of the year for our wonderful class community. Anyone with other suggestions is invited to send an e-mail to Mr. P.

Gradespeed AccountsÉ

Mr. P is requiring that each student log in to: http://gradespeed.mnps.org every Tuesday to review his/her grades and then inform mom/dad about the weekÕs progress.  The back of the Tuesday Signature Sheet will have a spot for any adjustments that need to be made (i.e.: late work, absent work, incomplete work, and low grades).  Mr. P will give a participation grade for the completed Tuesday Folder Sheet.  Student grade checking is the expectation in 7th and 8th grade, so letÕs get a jump on it now!

10). STUDENT REMINDER: In order to be ready for 7th grade, students need to be sure that they are not repeatedly turning in late or incomplete work.  Work should be neatly done with a correct heading.  Teachers should not have to try to grade work that is hastily thrown together due to a lack of time management or disorganization.  Teachers should not have to guess to whom work belongs because the correct heading is missing.

11). GRADES: any grades with a blank means no grade has been recorded as of yet for that assignment.  Any assignment that receives a zero (0) this nine weeks will not be eligible to be re-done or corrected for credit.  Òre-doÓ ÒmissingÓ or ÒincompleteÓ may be corrected.

12). Sounds Reading bases are due each Monday, March 29- April 18.  Each Monday, students need their parent verification form and that weekÕs portion of the reading log completed and signed.
