| 6 | Israelites: 1000BC, set up in an area on the Mediterranean Sea in southwest Asia called Canaan. Canaan (Promised Land) is present day Lebanon, Israel and Jordan. The Israelites were different from the majority of people of the time- they believed in one God. Early Israelites were herders and traders. The Israelite faith became known as Judaism. Spoke Hebrew language. Recorded their religion in the Hebrew Bible later called the Old Testament. Israelites believed to be descended from Abraham. God told them to leave Mesopotamia and go to Canaan to worship the one God. |
| 7 | Jacob: The Tweleve Tribes of Israel: Jacob raised 12 sons in Canaan. Each was divided into separate family groups or tribes. After 100 years drought forced the Isrealites to go to Egypt. In Egypt, the Israelites were enslaved by the pharaoh to build pyramids. The pharaoh ordered all male Israelite babies to be thrown in the Nile River. Moses was an Israelite baby hidden in a basket on the banks of the Nile. He was found by the pharaoh's daughter and raised in the pharaoh's family. |
| 8 | The Plagues: God sent ten plagues to get the pharaoh to release the enslaved Israelites. The last plague killed all the first-born children except the ones with lamb's blood above the door. Afterwards, the pharaoh let the Isrealites go. He later changed his mind and chased after them. The Red Sea was parted. The Isrealites got through. The Egyptian army drowned. |
| 9 | Forty Years: The Israelites wandered through the Sinai Desert for 40 years. During that time, their leader, Moses, went up on Mount Sinai and received the laws from God. This was a covenant. These laws were called the Torah (part of the Hebrew Old Testament). The most important part was the Ten Comandments. The Israelites' covenant with God promised they would follow these laws. The Israelites finally reached Canaan (The Promised Land) without Moses. He died. Joshua became the new leader of the Israelites. |
