TRIP: STAR PARTY@SHELBY BOTTOMS NOV. 8…

Dear parents,

On Saturday, November 8, 2008, our class along with Mrs. Rector's team, will participate in a family-night star party at Shelby Bottoms Park.  In case you aren't aware, a star party is an opportunity to view the constellations and other celestial bodies in the night sky.  The event is hosted by a local astronomy club, and they will bring telescopes to the park and help attendees observe stars and any planets that might be visible.  Please plan on attending.  This will be an excellent opportunity to learn about our solar system first-hand as we prepare for our space unit this year.  Some of the telescope targets for the November star party will include a crescent Moon, Jupiter, the Pleiades star cluster, and the Andromeda Galaxy.   Check out the website: http://www.sudekumplanetarium.com/features/index.shtml   It's also interesting to note that the Ancient Greeks, which we are now studying, named most of the night sky.  The star party will begin next Saturday evening around 7:30PM.  We will need to monitor the Adventure Science Center website for any updates (the event could be cancelled due to weather or cloud cover) and for any special equipment (like a red flashlight!)  Another website for Saturday's event is: http://www.sudekumplanetarium.com/starparties/index.shtml

This will be a great opportunity for a "family field trip". Basically, you bring your family, some snacks (hot chocolate in thermoses), blankets or chairs and enjoy the evening. Attendees can rotate through the various telescopes that the astronomy club has set up. The people at the Adventure Science Center highly recommend trying this event. The event is open to the public. While we are there, parents will be responsible for supervising their children. Of course, this is not required (after all, it is a Saturday night!), but hopefully we will have a good turn out! It sounds like a fun evening.
Here’s looking forward to a great evening!

Thanks,
Mr. P
